Height Gain: 350m (1200ft)
Height of peak: 596m
Start point: Llanwenarth Viewpoint Car Park
Grid Reference: SO 268 167
OS map: OS Explorer OL13

The peak of the Sugar Loaf can become dense with cloud, cold and windy so be prepared with appropriate clothng.

Location 1
The start of the walk is at the Llanwenarth Viewpoint Car Park which gives a great view of the valley below. Take the dirt path that leads diagonally away from the car park past the Brecon Beacons National Park sign. After a short walk a dry stone wall comes in on the left of the path, carry on along the path which follows the stone wall leaving the main pathway. Continue along this pathway downhill towards the wood.

Location 2

Follow the pathway which runs around the wood down into the valley and up the other side. A small steam is found in the base of the valley and gives a good view of the sugar loaf mountain above. Continue up out of the valley and then turn right up the clearly marked grass pathway up the mountain.

Location 3
Follow the grass path which will gently lead uphill and provides great views of the valley and the Black Mountains. The path eventually joins another path at a T-junction, take a right after admiring the magnificent view and follow the path up to the summit of the Sugar Loaf.

Location 4
After scrambling over some rocks you will arrive at the summit of the Sugar Loaf. Take some time to look around and enjoy the magnificent views. There are plenty of places to shelter from the wind and the elements and have a well earned drink and snack before taking in one last view and starting the decent down the mountain.

The Decent
The best and quickest way down starts at the south east side of the summit, where the decent starts by gently scrambling over some rocks to reach the more gentle easy going grass path. The grass pathway leads directly back towards the car park, follow this path and you should arrive back on the pathway which runs along the dry stone wall passed earlier in the walk. Take the gentle downhill path to the car park to complete the Sugar Loaf circular walk.

The view I got from the top was incredible. All the way round, pure landscape, peaceful and serene.
