Hereford College of Arts launches Brian Hatton Young Artist Competition

Hereford College of Arts are inviting young creative adventurers to celebrate the life and work of the Herefordshire artist Brian Hatton, by entering their celebratory competition. The Brian Hatton Young Artist competition is open to anyone aged 5 – 16 years of age who have a passion for the arts, with prizes of up to £750 to be awarded to schools and category winners.

The College welcomes all imaginative and expressive 2D art entries, including painting, drawing, illustration, collage and print, and artists are encouraged to draw upon the life and work of Brian Hatton as an inspiration for their entries. Schools can find some useful study materials about Brian Hatton, including lesson plans, online at www.brianhatton.herefordshire.gov.uk.

Brian Hatton was born in Hereford, and lived in Whitecross and then later Broomy Hill. During his life, he created over 1000 art works including, oil paintings, watercolours, and pencil and pastel drawings. Brian had a studio in London, where he began a successful professional career as a portrait painter, before tragically losing his life in Egypt, whilst serving with the Worcester Yeomanry, in the First World War.

Ed Hatton, relative of late artist, is excited and encouraged by a competition that offers something fun and lively for young people to engage with, and commented “so many of the exhibitions and events around Brian's work tend to be quite formal. The Edwardian period appears to have been a time of great fun and I think to engage the next generation things need to be light-hearted and modernised.”

Abigail Appleton, Principal of Hereford College of Arts added “We are delighted to be running a competition to inspire young artists and also help introduce a new generation to the work of Brian Hatton.  We believe it’s important to introduce awards for the schools of the first prize winners, as well as for the individual young artists, by way of recognition of the very important work the schools in our region do nurturing creativity. We're very grateful to the Herefordshire Community Foundation for their support for the competition”.

Entries must be sent via post, or dropped off to Young Artist Competition, Hereford College of Arts, Folly Lane, Hereford, HR1 1LT, and the deadline for the competition is June 5th 2017. All entries will be displayed at the Brian Hatton Young Artists Award Exhibition at the Folly Lane Campus from the 13th – 26th of July, with awards and a private view taking place on 12th July.
